Hi all,
This frame colour match thing has been bouncing around on various sites for a while now & has been bugging me also, so as my swinging arm & rear foot rest hangers are a bit worse for wear on my ageing Shiver, I though this may be of use to those of you who wish to tidy up your old steed a bit.
I have a 2008 Shiver 750 in body colours Couture Blue & Silver Crowd, but nowhere can you find a frame colour code as Aprilia don't list them, probably because the frames are anodised & not painted. It's impossible to get paint swatches/colour sample cards these days, as these doesn't seem to be the done thing anymore.
After a lot of searching & paint sampling, I have found a colour that is so close, you can even 'patch' spray a small area & the colour difference is almost indiscernible.
My frame colour looks like silver with a hint of bronze out in the daylight, not like the darker bronze as on the engine covers.
The paint I used is a BMW colour called Kalahari Beige (Pearl finish), code 481, but the same colour is also used by the Volkswagen Audi Group under the same name but with their code LA1Y.
It is a cellulose mix base coat paint, so will need protecting by a lacquer. I used an acrylic matt finish, as I thought satin finish was just a tad too shiny, but final choice is up to you.
After prepping the original surface, I would suggest using a non-cellulose mix etch primer or a good high build primer in beige/yellow colour before painting, as spraying the colour directly onto the anodised surface wont go at all well & will cause a reaction. The reason I suggest using a non-cellulose primer is because using a cellulose mix causes a reaction with the original anodised surface coating.
Hope this helps.
