Hey guys,
I took my tuono to Cadwell yesterday for my first track day and messed up on a corner, sellected a far too low gear which sent my back wheel sliding all over the place and put me onto the grass where i binned it.... Muppet :banghead
Anyway it hasnt put me off the track as it was fun untill then, but my questions was do any of you guys race your Tuono's?
i need to spend a couple of hundred pounds fixing it back to how it was or i though just turn it into a track bike and take the damage as it comes.
with the bike not really have a fairing i didnt know if it would be an expensive option being too easy to damage the engine...ect and a more focused sports bike would be a better option?
Any advice would be great...... and yes i know the best advice is not to fall off but i cant make any promises. :thumbup
Cheers

I have an RSV / Tuono hybrid track bike that I built last winter out of the remnants of 2 Y2K RSVs and a crash damaged 03 Tuono that I'd bought to break and it's ace.

Having raced supermoto for several years I'd got used to the more upright riding position and the Tuono offers the same sort of set up with more power, plus I didn't want to bin my Y2K RSV-R again after dropping it at Cadwell last year.

Here's a pic:

I spent some money having the standard forks re-valved and serviced and stuck an 02 Ohlins rear shock and linkage in it, also freshly serviced, and I couldn't be happier. Well, I could be if the starter sprag hadn't gone on me! Had all the parts ready to fix it and the bloody dog ate the alternator cover gasket so I'm waiting for another form my local Aprilia dealer!

Hey cuzza,
thanks for the info mate, you've done a great job with that rebuild, it almost looks too nice to take on a track.
i would defo like to get a Ohlin shock when i get some cash but the standard one is still decent and i think will do me untill i get a bit faster.
The Tuono can defo hold its own on the track i was just a bit worried about binning a £3k bike but i guess this track riding is an expesive business and it would cost around £2k for a half decent track bike anyway.
i love the dog story, the school teacher will never belive that... haha.
so thats 1-1 for track, anyone else want the deciding vote?

Not if you don't want it to it won't. My track bike owes me less than £700 and most of that was the cost of the ohlins rear and the fork and shock servicing! There are bargains out there. I bought 2 Y2K RSVs last year, one of £1500 and the other for £1400, both in good nick and with tax and test. Strip the bodywork and lights off and stick some fibreglass fairings on and you're on track really cheap.

love the dog story, the school teacher will never believe that... haha

Trust me, I'm a school teacher and I could barely believe it, bloody labradors! If he hadn't already had them cut off then he'd have lost his balls over that!

get a race ready CB 500 ( to thundersport spec ) for a grand, go out and keep up with almost anything out there on shorter circuits and laugh at people you go past knowing that there front forks cost more that your whole bike, come in and have the biggest smile on your face, change the oil and filter every so often then put it on its paddock stand and book another trackday, then go out in the cb 500 championship and see how big your balls are.:thumbup

I Ditto that, I also have a bog standard R reg CB500 sport which I use for commuting. Have you done any mods to the engine?

nope. if you want to race in the bridgestone 500's with thundersport then the engine is to remain standard to level playing field not just to see who has the deepest pockets and everyone is on the same tyres wets and drys. fair racing is the best and most entertaining form of racing.:thumbup

I didn't really have track days in mind , I thought one day my CB500 would make a great project ,soup up the engine and suspension a bit and make it look half decent like yours and still use it on the road. Is that the standard swing arm on yours ? It doesn't look like it . Anyway I don't want to hijack the thread !

everything is standard. just a race seat unit, hagon shocks, hagon spring in the forks, braided brake line, simmi pipe, rear sets and koso rev counter!
