2003 Tuono Fighter wont start

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem??

Took my 2003 Tuono out yesterday for its MOT...No problems at all passed it with flying colours.

Took the bike home and washed it, with a hose from the tap (def not power washer)

Wheeled her back into the garage where its kept over night (which also has my boiler in it so its never cold) and dried it off as best I could. Even started it again later in the afternoon and it started fine!!!

Went to go out a run today and it wont start. Hooked up the bike to my car thinking that the battery could be drained and still wont fire into life.

There is a smell of fuel coming from the bike and there is plenty good fuel in the tank. Tried leaving the bike for a few hours and it still wont start so don't think it could be flooded but that could still a possibility. Also the rev counter was only going up to 6000 revs when the bike was turned on but the EFI signal disappeared after a few seconds which it did before I had this trouble today. The clocks have also reverted to KM when its always been in MPH since I've had it.

Currently got my battery on a trickle charger and will leave it over night to see if that helps but just found the whole experience today a bit of a head scratcher.

Does anyone know what could be the problem going by my day today?

At a guess with the smell of fuel, yes is flooded.
The mph changing to kph would indicate a possible electrical glitch, maybe a bit water in a connection or the likes.
I only had the gen 2 so hopefully a gen 1 owner will help you more than me.
Hope you get if sorted.

I'm going to keep charging the battery over night and try again in the morning.
Think I'll have to check all wiring connections like you say and see if that throws up something.

the clocks revert back kph when low volts are detected.


oh, an dont run it off your car battery....

Agree with Gary. Common problem on the big V2 Gen 1. And don't forget to buy the uprated Ah battery, and you'll never have the problem again.
 
Cheers Paul, put a gel battery in rather than the old lead acid as I was told they are better. Fingers crossed my troubles are over

Hey, I've had this problem across a few Tuonos now, water at a connecter shorts the battery, which then drains. On one bike I notice the fan had stopped working- traced the loom and a big section had melted because of shorting. So it'd be a good idea to visually check as much of the loom as you can. Spraying where you can with WD (or whatever the lube-snobs recommend :) ).
Otherwise take care where you spray water when washing the thing.

Thanks for your wisdom it's greatly appreciated. Don't think I'll be putting a hose on the bike again after my last escapes. I do need to check over all the connectors though, so thanks for suggesting where to start.

Should say it's an 03 I have too, the dash resetting on a fluffed start happens to me too- indicative of a wiring issue I think (never happened on my '04). They are easy to flood when they don't start right. someone said not to turn the ignition of after, as it'll reprime after restarting the ignition and compound the flooding issue.

There is mention on here quite often of faulty earth/grounding connections, some pictures too, have a look through the forum for places to start. Who knows, maybe it's related to your indicator issue too.
On my last bike it was behind the frame at the front right, and it was pretty messy. Previously had issues with high tension leads at the spark plugs too.

That's brilliant Paul, I did manage to get to all the spark plugs after taking the air box off and one plug was needing attention but quite sure thats not the problem, definitely think it's an earth/wiring problem but you've given me lots to look for which is ace
