2001 Mille key/ignition problem.

I've just bought a bargain Mille for £1500 and the only issue it has is this...

When turning the igntion on, you have to turn the key all the way and then back by about 1mm to get power, it will sometimes stay on, but any tiny bump or knock could move the key to the full position switching it off & I can't risk riding like that.

I've been told to try taking the barrell apart & cleaning inside but I know nothing about ignitions & have never touched a barrell, I thought I'd try servicing it before trying a new barrell, can anyone help?

Thanks

Leon

Ive never really had any dealings with the mille's ignition switches mate but if you're after ideas to try i'd suggest seeing if the electrical switching part of the ignition (mounted on bottom of lock i guess) has rotated in relation to the lock itself. maybe the bolts are loose? try loosening them, if they arent already, and twist the electical part round the way you need it to go. If you take the switch off i cant imagine it being complicated, just a rotary switch with a couple of contacts. it'll probably just unclip to get inside then see if one of the contacts is slightly dirty on one edge, this could also cause what you describe above. if all else fails, nail a load of wd40 in the switch and turn it on-off-on-off a million times, other than that its replacement switch time. hope this helps

i had to replace my ignition barrel and switch after someone tried stealing my 02 mille r. the barrel isnt likely to be your problem, the switch itself is probably either loose or just knackered. its a common problem on loads of things, i work on cars for a living and replace loads of them, i know its different but believe me, even if the barrel was turning 1mm too far, it still shouldnt make the switch turn the power off. check your fixings below the barrel and check for any water ingress/corrosion down there as water can gather there.
