Does the 190/55 tyre sit less wide on the rim than a 190/50? Does the extra height affect how close it sits to the chain?

I'm looking for a tyre that gives more chain clearance than the 190/50 and slightly reluctant to get the 180/55 due to having had grip issues before with the thinner tyre. Thanks

I can't offer you any empirical evidence, only a quote from Avon's online data for their VP2 Supersport series (I only chose Avon because they're one of the few manufacturers to post such data):

190/50 width=192mm
190/55 width=180mm

Not sure that makes sense, but there it is.

tyre manufacturers are allowed a tolerance on sizes and iirc its 10mm on the width.

i found that 190/50 michelins rub the chain but avons and pirrellis dont

If you go to a garage that sells tyres and put two or three together ,you will see that every tire has a different profile ,the more sport orientated the tyre the more of tighter angle while a touring tyre has a more smoother curve and less agrresive even though they are the same size so it all depends on what you want a tyre for ...what grip issues did you have with the smaller tyre, i use the 180s and the only time its gave me any stick is when i didn't give it a couple of laps warm up, on the road again only time was in the wet when i got a bit carried away on an overtake. I always think its down to choice of tyre ie model/make and wot you use them for .full lean 180 no chicken strips yes please...

whats a chicken strip ? you guys kill me lol one minute your talking about tyres then the next your on about chicken (weirdos) lol

Did you not know kfc now make motorbike tyres, because they Kany ****** Cook lol
