South Florida has a motorcycle problem, and lawmakers are introducing legislation to show bikers that they'll go a long way to punish those who break the rules. Stunt riding (including wheelies), excessive speeding, and concealable license plates will get you a 10 year ban on your motorcycle license, mandatory jail time, and an impounded bike. If the punishment sounds like the medieval practice of cutting off the hand of a man for stealing, that's exactly how State Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera wants it.

Lopez-Cantera witnessed firsthand a variety of incidents during which reckless behavior was on display, including bikers flying down the highway at 120 mph, high speed wheelies, and more. Police officers can't even run plates since bikers will often flip them up to avoid detection, and it's very difficult to catch a motorcycle on the open road with a squad car. We like motorcycles, even though our focus is on cars, and it's disappointing to see that things have apparently gotten so out of hand in South Florida that draconian enforcement policies are being seriously discussed.

that is crazy!! i hope it doesnt go really well over there! id hate for it to be an imported policy here in the UK

All they are doing is giving the judge the means to smack down the crazy wanna be stunters. There are so many crazy dudes out there that do DUMB things right in the middle of traffic to show off. It always gets drawn up as some crazy looking litigation but it won't be used unless really needed. If you have a job and aren't a dead beat dad there is no way a judge would nail you for doing a light hearted wheelie down the road.

It seems a bit harsh as to ban someone for a quick pop of the front wheel but then where do you draw the line, if your popin a wheelie at 120 standing on the seat then your asking for it . Sorry but thats just giving us a bad reputation we dont want :mad1 anywhere :mad1

You got that right Steve.

*disclaimer - I type fast sorry my answer is a little long =D*
I HATE to hear people on streetbikes hauling a$$ through town, cutting off other drivers etc etc. It gives people the wrong impression. Everyone I know thinks I'm going to die just riding mine through town, hehe. If you get caught for going 100+ they just impound the bike and take your license for a small amount of time - at the worst. I'm generalizing here as it's different between states. I have faith that they are just giving the judges the means (if needed) to make sure the punishment fits the crime.

Unless your dampener is stiff - If you are doing a wheelie at 100+ (not hard on sportbikes nowadays) there is a chance that while putting it back down you will get speed wobbles and just completely lose it. Even if you have done it a million times it can happen. Not to mention the uncontrollable variables... debris and other drivers. I discourage people from anything like this and tell people to never try and keep up with me if we're out sport riding. Of course if your pro or have been on the racetrack and have had training do whatever you want I say, cause you have brains about you.

The system needs a little more power in order to keep up with the superbikes that have evolved over the last 10 years, that's all. Most kids are buying whatever they want now (with parents $) and doing what they see on TV. Some serious laws will keep them in check hopefully. Look at the crowds at a Supercross or Arenacross race. There are tons of kids in wheelchairs or casts with crutches out watching their buddies. This is all the result of SUPER fast dirtbikes and no self control. On the street these kids kill themselves.

This set of penalties will be tamed down if it ever gains any traction amongst lawmakers and will be used to help the situation not make it worse. I would rather have this instead of a multi-level license which limits how large of a motorcycles you can ride. Oh and how do you get around these penalties if you are caught and they are applied to you? Just hire a lawyer and you get off with a slap on the wrist. In America the system likes money and wants you out of jail paying taxes. Just hire an attorney to go play golf with the judge and they talk about how dumb you are . When you tell the judge that you realize the danger you put other people in etc etc. the judge will give you a couple points on your record and make you pay a little money. They would rather send you back to work the next day so that you can pay more taxes to the government. =]

Some laws are good and some are just revenue raising , that seems very harsh though . Here in melb they are trying to fit front number plates to all of our bikes , be it a cruiser to a sportsbike , as the speed cameras are missing out on all the bikes . It would make sense to me if they just turned the cameras around but thats too bloody hard . Instead we pay a xtra 60 dollars more than a car to keep our bikes on the road and now this proposel will cost between 90 to 150 to have fitted , they call these safety cameras , 4kms over and there goes a days pay .
