ive finally hit service time with my 51 mille. resentful am i after spending a fortune on my last bike (duccy 748) with servicing, that im going to do it myself.

So:

new sparkies
replace oil and filter
air filter
change coolant
change brake fluid

brake pads are fine - although seriouisly need to bleed my non existent rear brake.

Have i missed anything?? surely i dont really need the a valve check at 10k miles on one of these Rotax beasts??

Hey tom, I think valve clearences is every 10k miles (according to the manual) I could be wrong, although if you get a dealer to do that for you, it'll definately be cheaper to do than your old ducati.

it may be 'suposed' to be checked, but many people on here have not needed them tweaked - some with upwards of 30k miles

you obviously know more than I do, im still an RSV/V-twin noob going by the manual!

anybody here ever not bothered doing valve clearances? what is the risk of not setting valve clearance?

i hate to think of the consiquences of it going worng - presumably the joining of intimate engine parts lol.

but carbon kid on here has never had to have his done and he's got 35ish k on his if memory serves.

Always best to check that the clearances are within tolerance, you don't want to know what happens when they have no clearance.

For the time/cost involved I wouldn't recommend you skimp in this area.

Don't forget to change your clutch fluid too, otherwise looks like you've covered most of the DIY stuff.

When was the throttle bodies last balanced/CO checked?

Worth doing, you'll feel the difference, trust me.

good call, is throttle bodie balancing something that can be DIY'd?

9 tiumes out of ten the valve clearances don't need adjusting.

Problem is just as often as they widen they tighten as well.
If they tighten too much you drop a valve, and you can kiss most of your engine goodbye as it usually breaks the cam chain resulting in mucho metal to metal type stuff. It really is a lottery not to check them.

Checking them is not hard. Adjusting them is the pain in the rear unless you have Ronnie Corbett hands.

setting your Tb's just needs a vac guage pre 04. If your ecu has active Co trimmers you will need a gas analyser to set them 100% correctly.

Not a real hard question to ask yourself ... whip the covers orf and slip some guages thru the clearance gaps for peace of mind...or leave it and risk an engine, or worse if it goes at a bad time. No brainer in my books :nana

i got 17 plus thousand and my mille had them checked and perfect all in middle spec both inlet and outlet.and omly took my mate a couple of hours start to finish.

Checking the valve clearances is no biggy anyway, its a no brainer, just do it.
If they need adjusting thats when it becomes a little more difficult.

Lift your tank (it doesnt need to come off) get the airbox out.
The rear valve cover will come off with a standard 5mm allen key with a bit of jiggery pokery.
The front valve cover you will need a 5mm hex driver socket with a wobble attachment for the front screw. You'll also need to displace the TB's (dont remove them, just take them off the intake stubs and push to one side)

The hardest bit is making sure the valve cover gaskets relocate properly when you put it back together.
