07 R1 vs 0b CBR vs 03 RSVR???

Hi All

I currently have a 2007 R1 which I love in many ways - the pull above 4k, the noise, the quality etc - but does not get ridden that often - i find the riding position quite uncomfortable for my shoulders and back after 30 or so mins. its also v noisy (have an Akra decat pipe, but stock cans) which means that i get a bit paranoid about opening it up in town or through villages. However, the R1 is absolutely amazing on track - this yr have been to Spa, Sstone, Rockingham, Lydden Hill and Oulton Park. Despite the volume, it does sound awesome for an inline 4 - deep and bassy noise - one of the magazines said that its as close to a ducati as an inline 4 can get.

Previously had a 2003 Blade, which was great, v reliable etc, but never that exciting to ride.

Thinking about getting a 2003 Mille (I just like the shape of the Mk1 bike) - RSVR or Edwards and just wondered how you think I might get on with it vs the Yam - from a performance and riding comfort perspective - but also handling, noise and suitability for track days.

Test rode a 2008 Fireblade - the engine felt a bit bland - v linear and not the most exciting noise (tho bike was not run in), tho the riding position was ace and the bike felt very manoeverable. I didnt want to give it back at the end of the test ride, but it felt like a much less aggressive / exciting bike than the R1. Also looks a bit cheapo in places in comparison.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

There is only one way to tell and that is to ride one, they offer much more smiles per miles than any other bike. However going from an 07 R1 to an 03 RSVR may not be the way to go.

A mint low mileage 07/08 RSVR Factory may be a better option or even brand new 08 RSVR from TAZ. They are so cheap at the moment at £6595 otr. Get a set of carbon Akrapovic cans, Map2 activated, change gearing to one tooth lower front sprocket and 2 teeth on the rear and you won't be looking back over your change of bike

Ride one and you'll see how good these bikes are :thumbup

The clutches are a tad heavier than the light operation of Japanese bikes. If it is an issue to you an MPL clutch slave cylinder is a mod that lightens the clutch operation

well I have an 07 R1 and crashed my 06 RSVR in november, and ive also had the older RSV millie.

Comparisons, engine is obviously not as manic as the jap 4, but pulls in corners, which for me gives a lot more confidence, Acceleration wise the RSVR doesnt feel like its pulling as hard as it obviously is where as the jap is all rush rush rush. For me on the R1 theres too much to do and you have to be on it to get the most out of it. The RSVR can allow you to ride lazier and still have a good blast.

Brake wise there isnt much in it, but the engine bracking on the twin helps and sounds fantastic.

package wise the R1 is a lovely looking bike, the best of the jap 4's for me and i think they peaked with this one.

The aprilia is an awesome bike, very reliable, in fact I had more problems with the R1 than the ape.

Its horses for courses mate, what you need to do is find a good dealer who will let you take one out for an hour to get used to it, the tank is a lot thinner and your over a bit more

I'd echo the others. Get out on one for an hour.
I've had a VTR, 954 Blade, 03 Mille R, Speed Triple, K6 GSXR1000 (with 190RWHP!) a KTM 625 SMC and have come back to another 03 Mille (but not the R, sadly).
The Ape is the only bike out there that feels a decent size nowadays, I'm a little portly and find all the new bikes too small. Oh, and the sound.......
