05 Factory drops front cylinder

Greetings to all. Sorry about the long post, but thought I would be very specific.

Have had my factory for 2.5 yrs now and having always been on Jap fours, have been very impressed.

Bike spec:

05 RSV1000R Factory
Giannelli Cans
Map 2
PCIII
K&N air filter
MPL Clutch Slave cylinder
Gearbox oil jet mod

Four months ago I had a low speed altercation with a tin top, thanks to an unexpected departure by it from the kerb side. Anyway damage was all cosmetic and replacement parts were:

Top fairing
Head lights
Fairing carbon bits
Top fairing mount
Right and left fairing repaint & decals

Bike was fully rideable after and ran fine. In fact it was finally a joy to ride after earlier that week doing the oil jet mod.

Being in Australia the bike sat at the repairer (a Aprilia dealer) for 2 months waiting on parts.

Got it back and ran well, it always ran rich and previously dealt with dealer that said it was fine (but it wasn't), that was why the PCIII was added.

Okay so it ran great for a couple of weeks and then after cleaning the chain and washing it, took it for a short run and within 1km it dropped a cylinder.

Got it back to the repairer and they confirmed it wasn't running on front cylinder, so it sat for 2 days before they looked at it and it fired up fine. They changed the plugs went for a couple of runs and said it all seemed well.

Again ran well for a couple of weeks and then riding along city street and suddenly dropped the front cylinder again.

Back to the repairer and again sat for a couple of days and again fired up okay. So they checked everything and tried to replicate, it did it again in the workshop, but after a restart returned to normal. Mechanic found throttle bodies way out (running too rich) which is what I told the previous dealer 2 years earlier. Ran it numerous times over the week and did not run on one cylinder again

Again it is running fine but no guarantees from the dealer that the problem is resolved as they could not find a problem that would cause the intermittent failure of the front cylinder. They also added that Aprilia technical have suggested it could be a faulty ECU @ AUD$3,600 but are reluctant to replace it as it may not be the cause.

So I am looking for suggestions, I have found a couple of threads here that suggest dropping a cylinder on the 04/05 models is known but nothing specific.

What has been tried:

Check all wiring joins
Replaced plugs
Check fuel system
Remove PCIII
There are no ECU faults
It seems to be spark/ECU related as strong unburnt petrol smell from exhaust.

Dont laugh at this one - The only thing that is common in the two situations is that each time it drops a cylinder is after setting clock and redline limit (from the default 6,000) as each time the dealer has had the bike the battery has been disconnected and each time I was riding the bike for a couple of weeks before setting the clock and rev limit. Within 10 minutes of setting these the front cylinder stopped firing.

Thanks

Alright dude!

firstly welcome to forum!!

im sure this is a fixer no problem !!
Firstly can you continuously recreate the problem when restting the dashboard i.e is it a dashboard fault that causing the issue or is just coincidence?

quick way to tell mate is to see if you can recreate the fault then go directly to your coil pack and make sure that the ECU is switching both sides of the coil pack......( ive replaced a few of these mate not uncommon....
if you got this information then you can easily work out which way to go from there!!

If you get stuck let me know!!

Here is a wealth of information on our favorite ride. As you shall see, Griff knows.

Thanks for your quick resopnse Griff.

Just got the bike back from the dealer today, all they did was balance the throttle bodies as stated in my earlier post.

I have tried to replicate problem by setting dash as happened previously, however bike ran well for about 120+km with no problem (in fact running better than ever as it used to want to stall occassionaly at idle - which I always suspected to be due to it running too rich).

So for now I am waiting in anticipation for the problem to recur - hopefully it wont.

An interesting thing that I have noticed is that after turning the ignition off the tacho needle does a couple of second wiggle/dance before it settles to the off state. It never did that before the accident and after pointing it out to the dealer mechanic he did acknowledge he had never seen one do that before.

Anyway, thanks again and we'll see how it goes.

Ed.
