Hello and Advice

Same thing yesterday, wouldn't start straight away then battery quickly gave up. Bought a 3 stage charger last night and started sweet this morning.

It was colder yesterday so maybe flooded on full choke? Or maybe battery was a bit low?

Last owner had it dormant for at least 6 weeks and I did 4 short journeys since plus the obligatory start up and Rev up at work to impress the lads (3 times)... Probably the battery in my case.

Here are a few pictures of the new love of my life.

Still not got the bitch started yet though :banghead

Be nice... treat her with respect.....

If ya battery runs low dont keep trying. Ya dont want to fook your sprag clutch.

Listen to those that know about choke settings.....

Oh..... ENJOY !

:)

Wow, she is absolutely mint mate!

If you can't get her started after leaving her a few days and the battery has been on full charge too, then I would buy a new battery.....you can fit the normal Yuasa YTX12-BS or go for the same but in a 14 which does require a little molding of the seat or bracket I believe....but there's a thread on here about it.
My battery died and I charged it for a week and it still wouldn't hold enough charge to start it,a good way of telling is to jump it off your car battery, i did this and that's when I knew mine was buggered. ...or if you have a volt meter that will tell you too.

They need to deliver 9 volts or more to start the bike I believe.

Ok,...the lever on the l/h 'bar is not a choke. Its a cold start lever or fast idle.
The battery needs about 12.5v to turn over the engine and power up the efi.Good batteries are critical on Tuono's.Give the battery a good charge,....on the Optimate if thats all you have, but there are a lot better chargers out there.
Personally,I'd whip the plugs out and give 'em a clean.(Often neglected.)
A mate of mine owned a Mille that was a sod to start, but he eventually found the knack. With the battery freshly charged, use the cold start lever about half way.Do not touch the throttle.
As above with multiple starting attempts.Be carefull of knackering the sprag.
When, and or,if it starts,...slowly knock off the lever and use the throttle to control the revs.

I wish I had gone for the Yuasa 14 battery as it doesn't take much before its flattened by trying to start it. (Just in case you go down the new battery route)

Thanks for the advice guys.

The good bits - My battery is showing 13.2V, and is taking a full charge. Check. The weather today is 8 degrees. Check.

The bad bits - I was over keen/super excited the other day and tried for too long to start it, resulting is some (electrical?) smoke coming from under the seat unit, so I have f****d something... Any ideas?

The bike was turning over prior to this, just not firing up. I recon that was due to the cold. Now it is not turning over at all. The knocking noise (starter switch?) is still present. No faults showing on the dash either.

I know this is gonna be a rookie mistake, but to save me waiting another week to hear that baby, I thought it might be worth the embarrassment and putting it up here.

Have at it boys, and feel free to take the piss!

ph, have you looked under the seat to see what was causing the electrical smoke.

Have you checked the fuses.

What is the (knocking noise),,,,,,,,don't think the starter switch should be making any noise.

Did you mean the starter relay.

As for abuse,,,,,,,,,,naw yer jist a Fud. :yes :thumbup

Aye, sorry, relay. My bad.

I did have a look, but everything seems in order.

I have not yet checked the fuses. Really for no reason other than I just didn't want to start taking the bike apart until I have an idea what I'm looking for.

And yer right, I am a fud :lol

^^What he said^^
Does sound like the starter relay is fookered. The good news is that its a generic part and aint very expensive to replace. You can get them off ebay for around £25.
(Genuine Aprilia relays are around £40 from the dealer.Part no.AP8112927)

Thanks for that Keith. Ebay has them for under £15. I am gonna jump the bike tomorrow and see where I'm at from there. I'll give it some juice from the car, and if I have to, I'll take it for a jog in second and let the clutch go. That should be fun. Either way, It'll give me an idea if it can start.

Sidebar - I just got the Haynes Manual, so that should be of some assistance.

Try 4th mucker,,,,,,,,,,,,,,second 'ill leave a big flat spot on the rear. :yes

I'd go with the jump start from a car battery.
Bumping a big twin needs a lot of power and preferably downhill slope and if it doesn't go that's a hard push to get it back up the hill.
Good luck fella

Tried to bump start Roy's machine, steep downhill in third,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it just locked solid.

Jump starting with a car battery wont work if the starter relay is knackered. It needs to be making contact for it to work. The smoke suggests it is about burnt out.

So I tried to jump it with the car. Nowt. I thought about bumping it, but I live on a long, flat street and it seemed heavier and heavier every step I took. So I binned that idea. I think I have burnt out the starter solenoid, so a 150A replacement is on the way. The battery is new and showing plenty of juice, therefore I don't think that is the problem. I'm hoping that she'll fire right up when I replace the part. I will keep y'all posted.

and if I have to, I'll take it for a jog in second and let the clutch go.
:eek:ops

Read on a forum recently bump starting Tuono's knackers the sprag clutch!
- is that true?

Hermanj,

Nice bike. Just bought same year/colour Tuoldo end Dec. Not quite as good condition as yours, but good value for money still... and the grin factor is incredible! :thumbup

As you rode the bike back it's evidently sound. I recon once the starter relay is replaced... give it a jump start using car battery on 2/3rds 'cold start switch' setting, and you'll be grinning away...
