New owner of 2002 RSV Mille

Hi all,

New proud owner of a 2002 Mille which I got about 2 months ago. Been riding bikes for about 18 years now and have ridden nothing but Japanese inline-fours, so I decided it was time to scratch the v-twin itch and got myself a Mille to test the waters. Suffice to say I loved it immediately and was in having a blast for about 6 weeks until one day I went to start the bike and received a nice spark followed by a puff of smoke that come from under the seat. So here I am to ask for help so I can get my precious back on the road

Solenoid knackered??.

Have you actually taken the seat off yet and looked?

Hi redratbike,

I took off the seat and the meshed side cover and noticed a couple of things.

Battery voltage is at 12.5V as measured with a multimeter
Noticed a disconnected plug tucked under the seat which from reading through the forums it seems it's used for diagnosis?
Also noticed a blue flexible tube coming from somewhere underneath the tank which was disconnected - I did notice a couple of nipples which I assume the tube connects to one of these? (pic attached).

I will try out the starter solenoid later on in the week and see if this is faulty. I should note that before I disconnected the battery I was not getting any power to the dash display and didn't hear anything when I tried to start the bike? Will do a bit more reading through the forums and see how I go.

- correct, connect and in diagnostic mode

- these are fuel overflow pipes - two pairs of two tank to above what you see and from the underneath of ecah down behind engine

I should note that before I disconnected the battery
- check the fuses as that spark and smoke could be one of them going

Well, aren't electronics fun! I reconnected the battery this morning to do a little bit of diagnostic work an suddenly everything clicked and ticked as normal. Bike started up first go!? Obviously there's a loose or shorted connection so will have to keep and eye out for it as nothing was obvious.

Dr_D - didn't fully understand your response to the blue tube question. Should I be connecting the blue tube to one of the nipples?

edit: just noticed the second pipe had been tucked way back under the under tray. Seems like they need to be connected but can't figure out which is which.

There should be two blue tubes - connect both any way round - both overflow lines
As for electrics - check the tilt switch - its that rattly box next to battery.
