Helmet Cams

The use of helmet cams is on the increase, for what ever reason, but to start a debate what are the risks, I mean helmet manufactures spend small fortunes on R&D, impact dissipation, speed stability, comfort and wind noise. I guess all of these are compromised in some way by mounting a camera to helmet, let alone what happens in crash situation where the camera and mount take a direct impact where does the force go? I assume the best scenario would be for the camera to be thrown clear but what if its not, the camera and its mount is potentially a lethal weapon coming through the helmet shell. I am sure I read somewhere that this was a contributing factor in Michael Schumacher's injuries after his skiing accident. What's the opinion out there?

I can say that I have a helmet camera for the odd film, But if I were to hit my head on the camera side, the Mount would definitely break away, If not however the helmet should be able to with stand the impact as if you were hitting your head on something the same size on the ground.

I mentioned the Schumacher scenario on another post on this forum a year or so ago. His skis caught a low rock and he flew head first into a larger rock. The helmet cam acted like a hammer, focusing all the force onto one spot, split his helmet into two and resulted in brain damage. One report suggested he would not have had brain damage except for the helmet cam.

But, I think the probability of landing directly on the helmet cam is low.

That said, I'd probably mount one on the bike rather than the helmet.

They are useful for insurance purposes, and for fun rides, but if the police stop you they can use the recording as evidence against you.

Seeing a biker with a camera on their helmet only says one thing to me ........ you fill in the blanks.

I have considered buying an action cam recently , but would be very loath to fix it to my helmet . A safer option would be to fix camera to the bike .
I know a helmet mounted cam will record basically what the rider see,s , excellent for court proceedings and insurance claims ,but also a 1 st class view of the speedo !!! not always a good thing !!!!!.
I thinks this will always be a marmite subject , I personally would err on the side of personal safety and liability protection , for this purpose I would never use a sat nav in the car as incriminating evidence it records can and would be used against you ,( I have a clean licence and i like to drive enthusiastically when the opportunity arrises ) definately would not have a recording device such as sat nav on the bike and only use an action cam if certain data can be not recorded .

sorry to go on a bit but just my opinion !!!

Good point, I do have one but like I said, Its only used for recreational videos I.E. when I rode up some mountains or my track day footage.

It would be abit silly to ride with it everyday unless you were able to angle it away from the speedo

my gf and i were involved in a 50mph crash, i managed to miss the C$nt pulling out, just, my gf wasnt so lucky, first thing out the drivers mouth was>>>>> guess>>>>> wasnt my fault, he didnt see the cam stuck on my lid, nor did he see us??

foottage sent to insurers as proof, he also got done for dangerous driving

so defo worth it, i dont leave home without one!

I would consider using one, but mount it on the bike, also available are the ones like the store security, door men ect use, the body cams, again would that cause you damage if you had a spill on the bike.
another thought, if you used one for insurance purposes, would you also consider a rear facing one.

I had a camera mounted to my crash helmet when I had my accident back in October. As my head hit the car the camera "popped off " and didn't cause me any injury. It did however film the whole incident which the Police used to prosecute the car driver and made my Insurance company rub their hands with glee. It proved beyond all shadow of a doubt that the car pulled out in front of me. As I can't recall what happened and there were no credible witnesses the Police said that without the film they most probably wouldn't have had enough evidence to prosecute as the car driver who was adamant that they were not at fault. they soon changed their statement after seeing the film.
Amazingly the camera was still useable although the bike and my crash helmet are both well beyond economical repair. So would I recommend a helmet camera? Most definately just make sure that you don't film yourself breaking the law, they did check the whole sim card not just the last few minutes when I had my accident.

Some good comments for and against the use and position of a camera. I still wouldn't want one on my helmet but its every ones individual choice.

Don't like them and don't ride with anyone that uses them.

If I do decide to have some fun while I am out the last thing I want is someone filming me and my numberplate.

I can see how they have been of benefit to members in case of an accident, but I also know of people that have had their bikes confiscated due to footage uploaded to youtube by one of their "friends".

I bought a camera after and accident where a car changed lanes without indicating. I jammed on the breaks and turned to avoid a collision. Stupid move I know but instincts took over. I lost control and crashed. The driver said he didn't change lanes and no one stuck about to get witness statements. My insurance said as I lost control, it was my fault crashed.
So now I record my journey's.

Only used mine a couple of times, both were on the side of my lid. Decided it was a bad idea as speedo in view a lot, have tried to mount it on the bike but it seems it doesn't like the vibration of the twin. Behind a clear screen would work but I'm not ready to shell out for a screen just to film

What a bummer! makes you think that hitting the other vehicle rather than avoiding it would be the better option. but as you said self preservation and instinct take over. I think in your case the fact that the driver stopped means he was close enough to see you crash and was therefore involved but try and prove it.

As a wee side note the SACU have banned the use of head cams in Enduro's and MX's.

I use mine mounted to the bike but because it vibrates so much I was thinking about wearing it on some type of harness but not on ma lid.

Ma napper shakes aboot as bad as ma machine.

Reading the replies if yer got one use it all the time, yer never know when some fukkwit'll jump oot in front of yer.

Mate of mine has a chest harness for his go pro I guess it's designed for runners and extreme sports
