Chain lube

Hi guys i have been reading the write ups on here about chain lube, I am going to buy wurth's dry chain lube but wanted to know if i need to clean the chain of old lube or can i just spay it on the chain with old lube still on it??

Wiped my chain and cleaned with Scott product 365!?Removed excess.Chain came up spotless,then sprayed with Wurth lube.This Wurth does not seem as good as it was??AL

i use silcolene but always give the chain a wash down with parrafin just to make sure i get those nasty bits of crap out then wipe off and reaply fresh lube

RSV Shep, you should never apply lube on top of lube.

All you do is trap all the grit and crap that has been picked up from the road in the lube, this then grinds away at your sprockets and chain and can cause premature failure.

I always clean mine down with paraffin every 3 or 4 months and relube, all depends on how many miles I ride too.

Doing this makes the chains and sprockets last longer.

PS. I use the Castrol chainwax about £7 a tin, works a treat.

Cheers for the info guys, was only going the wurth's dry route because i get fed up of cleaning the back wheel of crud!

So is paraffin the best stuff to use to clean the chain??

Yeah, parrafin's pretty good at cleaning all the gunk off the chain and it's cheap too. I've never got my head round using the Wurth Dry Lube so i use Wurth motorcylce chain wax instead.

Tell me to fook off and mind my own business but I'll say it anyhow.

Watch you don't get paraffin on your tyre!!

I always remove my rear wheel and let the chain sit in a bowl of paraffin whilst agitating it with a paint brush that's had its bristles cut down in length by a half. As you clean a section of say around 6" then dry it off and move on to the next section.

Reason I do this is I hate seeing paraffin dripping all over my lovely fairings.

PS. Don't forget to do the underneath section of the chain too!!

You can usually pick it up at your local Petrol station. Esso still sell it, think most Shell stations do too.

Guys, I use Lamp oil to clean my chain, recently I passed on a bottle to Hooked, Cleans the ground in flick on the rear wheel too. £1.99 a bottle and dosent damage the o ring rubbers either....reminds me, I must get my oil back from Hooked. I use both Castrol and also recently brought a tin of the Muc Off wax from Halfords, it hasnt flicked on th eback wheel as much as the castrol did.
To reduce the flick of crap on the back wheel, I usually apply mine as Im putting my bike away for the night, this gives it a chance to dry on the chain better.

The old drive chain issue :devious

Its really suck it an see ..... whats best for one aint always best for all.

I've used the chainwax method ( various manufacturers ) some good some bad ....

I aint an everyday biker, I've covered 6000 miles per year for the last 3 years on the RSVR ..... generally long runs at weekends.

The method I use is rub the chain down with an oily rag, then work into the chain some engine oil using a stiffish brush.

Needs to be done often, every couple of hundred miles or after a long run ( best while chain is warm )....


If ya using a wax ....... don't overdo it i.e. wax on wax on wax cos you'll end up with a grinding paste on your chain and sprockets ...........
At least this way there aint no foreign bodies sticking to the chain and you are regularly checking for tension :thumbup :thumbup ........

I know that this is the method advised by Mr Yamaha on all his bikes.

I thought paraffin and petrol are no good for cleaning as they wash the lube out from the O or X ring seals? Isn't diesel supposed to be the stuff as it contains oils in it?
Anyhoo, going to clean my chain in the spring and swap from wax to Wurth dry lube as I'm sick of cleaning the wax off.

Parafin is one of the only things you can use with X or O ring chains its great stuff. In my Hayabusa manual it says use Kerosine (US for Parafin)

I got mine from the Garden centre (its used in greenhouse heaters !!)

Yes I do believe you may be right (Scientifically Proven !) It will be even faster with its replacement decals from Image Works...

What you done with it, traded it in for a carbon fibre one perhaps?

That's exactly how I do my chain and I've never damaged the 'O' or 'X' rings.

No its in the Garage but I ripped the shock and linkage out to give it a good clean because John the Old boy I bought the Bike of in March this year used EP80 as a lube so it was a bit "Icky" but boy how clean when I got it all off and the sprockets look like new for an 8K bike.

I have it back together (mechanically at least) but am going to do some paintwork to bring it back to "As New" condition (Well I am going to fix the panels and prime and top coat the plastics, then take it into Merlin’s here in Durham for them to shoot a few clear coats on. The bikes not bad at all but It fell off the stand when six weeks old and most of it was repaired but I want to make it "Like New"

Just been removing and copper slipping the fasteners so they work like they should. Luckily for me the previous owner has an engineering background so everything came out just fine.

I got a quote from Image works for £80 for all the decals !

I didn’t think that was at all bad and given they do a lot for the After Market repair industry I figured they should be good.

Getting stuff from the States is decidedly more expensive these days !

I may well start a post on the refurbishment
